I have just a few updates for you this week.
Homework: Students should be writing their homework on their agendas each Monday. I am trying my best to go around and check that they have done this. They tend to "cherry pick" which homework assignments they write :0). The students should be writing the name of the Readworks assignment (you may see extras on your child's home screen. Some were assigned as choice during trackout), the math facts that need to be studied this week, and the name of the spiral review quiz. The agenda and the spiral review worksheet should be in their homework folders. I check homework on Fridays. If your child's homework was not submitted by Friday morning, you will see a pink reminder sheet in their Monday folder. I am glad to say that we have most students doing their Readworks homework weekly. I have begun to "grade" the open response questions for all Readworks turned in by Friday morning. It is my goal to grade these on Friday or Saturdays. I try to give positive feedback and suggestions as needed. I encourage you to review these comments with your child. before beginning the current week's work.
Cursive: We are beginning a cursive unit. I have a review and practice session with the kiddos. They have a link on this website to review the instruction, which they may view at anytime. They also have worksheets to complete throughout the week. These will be reviewed and sent home. If the sheet is incomplete, please have your child do it and return to school.
Multiplication facts: We are off to a great start. If your child struggled and did not pass the tests, I have put a study reminder strip on their book bags. If your child is continuing to struggle and has put in nightly reviews, please contact me so we can work together on this. The kids should be studying in short bursts of 10 minutes or so.
Classic Book study: The kids are off to a great start. They have set weekly reading goals for themselves and have a short summary to write after each chapter read. They are applying what they have learned in Peter Pan to their own readings. They children are given at least 20 minutes of reading time a day (should be plenty for a 3-4 page chapter) as well as extra time during arrival time or as other work gets done. If they begin to fall significantly behind, I will contact you and the child can bring home the book nightly.
