I have just a few news items. For you.
Field Day, Ottercise, is coming up on April 13th. Note from Mrs. Sammons:
There are water events, students are not required to participate if they do not want to get wet. NO bathing suits, but please wear appropriate clothing. STUDENTS WHO DO NOT HAVE A CHANGE OF CLOTHES CANNOT PARTICIPATE IN WATER EVENTS. Teachers will be making sure students have a change of clothes before beginning the events and no phone calls will be made home to get items. Students without sneakers/tennis shoes will not be able to participate in most events. Please apply sunscreen at home, it cannot be brought to school. Water bottles, sunglasses and hats can be brought, but it is the student’s responsibility to keep track. There will be a water station for water breaks and to refill water bottles.
Next Field Trip: We will go to Cary High School play on April 27th. You have already paid and turned in permission slips for this. Due to the limited space we are unable to have parents join us for this trip this year.
Quarter Focus: We will have three more weeks of regular curriculum and then two weeks of review before the EOG exams. Soon, look for reading practice homework. I will also switch to a small math packet for review for homework in two weeks.
Skills we ALL need to work on in general:
Math-
- Dividing by one: 4/X=1 or unknown part division: X/4=4 (these are tricky, most students will say 4 or 1 but the answer is 16)
- two step word problems
- Finding missing side of rectangle when given the area OR the perimeter and length of one side.
- Finding combined area AND perimeter of two rectangles put together (rectlinear figure) without using blocks/grid.
- Recognizing equivalent fractions. For example: which figure shows 1/3? The correct choice may be a 2/6 shaded figure.
Language Arts-
- Stamina in reading…. We need to take short mental breaks and then continue to focus. Work on increasing reading time at home.
- Understand vocabulary using context clues. This can be worked on nightly with reading. Look at the book, ask meaning of one word, and then “how do you know”? How does the student use the clues support the meaning?
Getting Ready for the EOGs
During the final three weeks, students will have a weekly homework review packet for math. Take note of what your child misses or skills of which he/she needed support. Review these skills frequently.
- Continue to practice nightly on multiplication and division fluency.
- Read long to support stamina. Talk to your child about the book.
- Visit the “Otter Parent” page of this website. Go to the “McGraw Hill
Education link” . Here you will find practice tutorials and independent practice
pages for all of the Language Arts standards. - Visit EOG sample test links and take practice tests. Note items that
your child had trouble with so that you can practice those skills with your child. - READING http://www.ncpublicschools.org/docs/accountability/testing/releasedforms/g3elapp.pdf
- MATH http://www.ncpublicschools.org/docs/accountability/testing/releasedforms/g3mathpp.pdf
- Visit recommended math games websites to sharpen skills where needed- see GREEN games page that was sent home
- Target skill review on missed items on math review homework.
