We have settled in nicely into third grade and are hard at work. At this point the kids have learned their routines, I have learned their names, and we are beginning to embrace the learning challenges of third grade. Life is good!
In reading we have begun instruction with Wake County's third grade curriculum, EL Education. We are reading about children facing learning challenges. The skills we are learning are to recount the story, understand the author's message through the characters actions, and how the author supports the message with details in the text. We are also beginning to learn about affixes and how we can understand unknown words by looking at word parts. We are learning to use a dictionary to find word meanings. Our focus in the upcoming unit is reading informational text and writing to informational prompts using text evidence.
Interim Reports will be in sent home on Friday 8/9/17. Please note: in literacy we have just begun to deeply read and write. Our curriculum is organic and grows over time. As such, we will have limited assessments applied at this point of the quarter.
In Monday folder this week, you will find a letter with your child's Beginning of Grade (BOG) score and some additional information. Please make sure to look for this letter and retain for your records.
Homework- As a reminder, your child should be reading nightly. Students are to write the name of the book, at least one time during the week, and log the time read nightly. The agendas are due on Friday. Please review the agenda with your child and initial. Also, math homework is given out each Monday and due no later than Friday. If your child forgot to pick it up on Monday, they can always do so throughout the week! The students will also have a new reading homework assignment. This is due at the end of the week and should be done on line. Please let me know if your child does not have online access to do homework. This can be done as the reading time for the night. The assignments will be through ReadWorks. Your child should have this website saved. They may also go to Google Classroom to access it. They should push the red "login with google" button to access the site.
