New In Math:
1. In math we have begun to study and learn in a math workshop structure. Mondays I teach whole class, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays the students rotate in centers, Friday is teacher's choice. The daily centers include: Teacher time- small group instructional lessons, Center Time- working in groups of 2 or 3 playing a skill based game or problem solving challenge, Lesson Work- working independently on the current skills. Students go to each center each day. This program allows for me to individualize instruction a bit more as I can work with small groups, it also allows the kids to work independently and with partners daily. The kids love it and so far they are doing great.
2. Multiplication Quizzes- Students know that they are to take 2 quizzes independently weekly. They can take them at home or school and should have a print out as evidence. Begin to look next week in agendas to see under "math homework" what quiz your child is studying for.
3. Ten-Marks on-line math program- look for a letter in Monday folder introducing this program. Students are assigned lessons to be done on a weekly or biweekly time frame. Students are given time in class and they may work on them at home as well. If you child is working at home, I would love your feedback on the program. I have all students enrolled, even SSA math students. It is a great review for all and the kids get immediate feedback. There are also instructional videos and hints that they can click on if they need help. I will try to print out and send home a bi-weekly "report card" that gives us feed back with how your child is learning the skills and how they are using the instructional resources. I may also assign some remediation where your child needs it during track out that can be worked on if you like.
Language Arts:
1. At this time I am not sending home weekly writing assignments- read on to see what they are doing...
2. We are reading Charlotte's Web as a class book. The kids have assignments in blocks of 4 chapters to read. For each reading, they will be given a Literary Circle role to complete and one question for each chapter- this can be found in the pig flip book. Students are writing assignments in their agenda. All reading and assignments should be completed by the assigned day. Books and materials must be brought to school daily. The kids are given time each day to read and write. They must take it home for homework if they do not get work done in class. Right before trackout we will have a Charlotte's Web celebration. We will put on a Reader's Theater skit for our Kindergarten reading buddies and have a small book club celebration in class.
3. I am looking into the possibility of starting on on-line spelling program. If I get that approved, we will begin after track-in!
4. Kid Biz- Your child should be doing one article at home per week. This can take the place of R&R- just record it! Your child should score a 70% or above on the quiz. If this score is not reached, he/she must do another one in its place. The kids should be practicing the skill of going back into the text to support their answers!!!
